The One That Hasn’t A Moustache

CNC-LN002 - BLACK MOUSTACHE CANDY

Why is the King of Hearts the only one that hasn’t a moustache?

~ James Branch Cabell

ID-10056131

DO YOU LOVELY SOULS KNOW WHY?

King cards of all four suits (Source: Wikipedia)

Before scrolling down to the history of playing cards, here are some fun facts of the kings:

  • The king of hearts is sometimes called the “suicide king” because he appears to be sticking his sword into his head and he is the only king without a moustache.
  • The king of diamonds is the only king not depicted carrying a sword, wielding an axe instead giving him the card playing nickname “the man with the axe.”
  • The king of spades is the only king looking to the right.

HAVE YOU EVER NOTICE THE ABOVE WHILE PLAYING?

ID-10057430

 WELL….*GULP*….I DON’T….

 ε=ε=ε=┌(;*´Д`)ノ

Playing cards were invented in imperial China and were found in China as early as the 9th century during the Tang Dynasty (618–907). By the 11th century, playing cards could be found throughout the Asian continent.

W.H Wilkinson suggests that the first cards may have been actual paper currency which were both the tools of gaming and the stakes being played for as in trading card games.

The Chinese word pái (牌) is used to describe both paper cards and gaming tiles.

*****

Playing cards first entered Europe in the late 14th century, probably from Mamluk Egypt, and are still used in traditional Italian,Spanish, and Portuguese decks.

The Mameluke deck contained 52 cards comprising four “suits:” polo sticks (baton), coins, swords, and cups.

King of Coins (Diamonds), King of Swords (Spades), King of Batons (Clubs), King of Cups (Hearts): four kings from a Spanish deck (Source: Wikipedia)

In the late 14th century, the use of playing cards spread rapidly throughout Europe. Documents mentioning cards date from 1371 in Spain, 1377 in Switzerland, and 1380 in many locations including Florence and Paris.

*****

The earliest cards were made by hand and printed woodcut decks appeared in the 15th century.

In the 15th century, Europeans changed the court cards to represent European royalty and attendants, originally “king”, “chevalier” (knight), and “knave”.

The original meaning of knave was male child, so in this context the character could represent the “prince”, son to the King and Queen.

The meaning ‘servant’ for the word ‘knave’ was developed later.

*****

The four suits now used in most of the world — spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs — originated in France in about 1480.

The whole deck of 52 cards represents the 52 weeks of the year. Therefore, the whole deck is also equal to 364 days of the year (the positivist calendar) with the four suits corresponding to the four seasons.

The United States introduced the joker into the deck. The styling of the joker and its function are almost identical to the Fool from the original French Tarot deck, which had been removed in the transformation to the standard 52-card French deck.

*****

In a French deck, the court cards do have names. Because the manufacture of playing cards was illegal in the UK during the Interregnum, when the English Restoration came and the court began playing card games, the suits in an English deck came from the French deck, but without all of the lore.

The most common names for the kings were:

  • King of Diamonds: Caesar (presumably after Julius Caesar, dictator of the Roman Republic)
  • King of Spades: David (a biblical king)
  • King of Clubs: Alexander (king of Macedonia and ruler of one of the largest empires of the ancient world)
  • King of Hearts: Charles (presumably after Charlemagne)

In early games the kings were always the highest card in their suit. However, as early as the late 14th century special significance began to be placed on the nominally lowest card, now called the Ace, so that it sometimes became the highest card and the Two, or Deuce, the lowest.

We Are Family!

In human context, a family (from Latin: familia) is a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity, or co-residence.

The diverse data coming from ethnography, history, law and social statistics, establish that the human family is an institution and not a biological fact founded on the natural relationship of consanguinity.

The term blended family or stepfamily describes families with mixed parents: one or both parents remarried, bringing children of the former family into the new family.

As an agent of socialization, family is the primary source of influence behind the formation of personality and the growth of a child due to its influence on the basics of personality and its role providing gender identity.

This impact is large as the family confers its social position onto the child when it is brought into the world.

Contemporary society generally views the family as a haven from the world, supplying absolute fulfillment.

And the following is how a lovely soul, Robin, views the FAMILY as

We’ve received a comment from a lovely soul, ParentingIsFunny, sharing with us her P.O.V in our “Let’s Play: Home Sweet Home” post:

Let's Play - Home Sweet Home 4 - ParentingisfunnyThis lovely comment of hers made me remember an SMS message that I’ve received from a friend, sharing with me the meaning of the word – FAMILY – itself.

Perhaps you might already knew about this, but I found it very true and interesting so I’ve decided to share with you lovely souls this lovely message:

04082013 - FAMILYMaybe the person who came out with the word ‘Family’ did not form the word basing on the above acronym, but isn’t it amazing to be able to make this word so true to itself?

Sixty Minutes Of Joy

Since the day my doctor announced to me that my body had literally broken down like an overhauled engine.

He told me two things

1. I was lucky because I was not yet a mother

2.  To stay away from babies because the negative energy from my health condition might affect them

It has been so many years since that day and I always try not to carry any babies (just for the benefit of doubt) of my friends or relatives. I would just play ‘peek-a-boo’ with them from a distance for it always makes me laugh whenever the ‘peek-a-boo’ trick works on a baby.

This year has been a wonderful year so far because I’ve not been on medication for the past six months!

Today,  I’ve decided to break the rule after meeting this beautiful soul.

2013-07-28 18.04.37

Hey you! Beautiful soul

How was your day?

Loved the way you looked at me

” Carry me, carry me”

Those eyes cried out to me

Made my hands act faster than brain

“Don’t worry, be happy”

A valuable message in all your smiles

Sixty-minutes of joy that no money could buy

Wanted to take more pictures but I was rushing to another place during that time and had to interrupt his feeding time while taking these two pictures. However, he didn’t seem to mind and gave me one of his most beautiful smiles…ヽ(´ー`)ノ

This 5-month old baby comes from a single-parent family. He has an older brother who is around one year old plus and his mother is only 21 this year.

What was I doing at the age of 21? I couldn’t help but wonder while my friend was telling me about her story.

Did she make a right or wrong decision for defying her parents? I cannot really judge since everyone has the right to fight for their love, no matter how crazy it might have been.

All I can see now is a beautiful young lady who is willing to bear the full responsible for all her actions.

I sincerely wish her all the best and may her two lovely gems do her proud after they’ve grown into fine young men.

Before I end this post, here’s another lovely song to share with all lovely souls out there and may your heart be filled with love and hope whenever you see a smile on someone else’s face.

Have a lovely Sunday and may your Monday ahead be one of the best days in the week!

Till then,

Cheers & TTFN~ 😀

26072013 - A Flower Will Always Be Beautiful...

The above two flowers — from some previous arrangements — were brought back by Lovable Mum while she was changing new flowers at one of our H.Q.s for some new occasions.

She would never waste a flower in her arrangement and thus these two flowers were being ‘recycled’ by her,  along with some other flowers so that they can be further admired by her lovable children (i.e. Bro, Baby Sis and Yours Truly…LOL).

Though I have no talent in flower arrangement, I am being blessed and motivated by many lovely souls out there and I am glad to be able to come out with the following creations which are now available at our online shop:

A house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body.
Benjamin Franklin

Family was all I’ve had when our father went missing during one fateful day, many many years ago,

Leaving us with no money, only lots of unknown debts to be paid off.

Food and fire for the body were provided to us by many kind relatives from the maternal side

Food and fire for the mind,

They were provided by what’s left in the family so that we can stay always strong as a family

And not just people, living inside the same house.

A BIG THANK YOU TO SWEET D-ANNA, AS WELL AS ALL LOVELY SOULS WHO HAVE BEEN WITH US ALL THESE WHILE  FOR ALL THE  WONDERFUL MORAL SUPPORTS!!

Now, let’s get back to the main topic of this post.

We are really thankful to have received quite a few entries after uploading Part 2 of our ‘Let’s Play: Life is full of possibilities, Write it out!”  and what makes us even more thankful is to see some lovely souls submitting their second poem entry. 😀

ID-10057430Any third entry since there are three words? Hehehe…

Just earlier on, we’ve uploaded a post ‘Boxes of Beauty Around Me @ Clouds N Cup, Be With Us and since this is all about originality, I’ve decided to use those photos as the background designs for all the lovely submission received.

Without further adieu, it is our honour to present you Entry 4 to 6:

Write It Out - 4th Entry By Yoshiko

Write It Out – 4th Entry By Yoshiko

Yoshiko is indeed a very sweet and sporting soul and besides being the first lovely soul to submit her poem in our initial Let’s Play Post, this is her second entry and once again, being the first in the line to use our ‘comment box submission’.

Thank you, Yoshiko!

If I were to use a word to describe totalovrdose, the word “ROMANTIC” pops up almost immediately and when I received this poem entry from him, I am not surprised at all.

Thank you, totalovrdose!

Write It Out – 6th Entry By Yvonne

Yvonne is one lovely lady with a very strong soul (Check out her blog and you will know why) and she happens to be one of the lovely contestants who has received the bookmark in our ‘Let’s Play: Find Love”.  We are glad that she has decided to join in the fun once again!

As she did not indicate the actual word, so I’ve chosen ‘Happiness’ after reading her poem for I think in general love and freedom can be part of happiness as well.

Thank you, Yvonne!

We’ve received comments from some lovely souls telling us that they are not able to join in the fun because they are not good with writing poems.

Frankly speaking, I AM NOT GOOD WITH WRITING POEMS TOO…LOL…and I cannot even spell the word ‘POEM’ correctly without the help of that wriggly red line…so, do not worry about it!

One very good example would be mummyshymz who told me that she was not good at writing and she decided to join in the fun by trying it out:

As for the 4-line poem, so far we’ve received 3 entries from 3 lovely souls and I really enjoyed reading the poems that they’ve submitted and via this post, I do hope we can receive more entries because I really love all the interactions made via our all our Let’s Play posts.

Let’s Play: Life is full of possibilities! Write it out… (Part 1)

LIFE IS FULL OF POSSIBILITIES!

(Extracted from “Message From God”)

Don’t be discouraged by what seem like dead ends.

Every moment in your life carries infinite possibilities, just waiting to be discovered.

Like a vine finding its way even through the slightest openings in rock solid walls.

SO WILL YOU!

During a week or two before, I’ve once again received lovely souls leaving us comments for a quiz re-blog – What do You Want In Life.

Since this quiz was re-blogged during the earlier days when we were not surrounded by so many lovely souls; we will take this opportunity to re-play it:

what-you-want-in-life-quiz4

Life is full of possibilities! What do you want in life?

STICKING TO THE BASIC

Do share with us what you want in life by leaving the 3 words that you’ve found in the comment section.

WRITING IT OUT

For all the lovely souls who would like to take this game into the next level, here’s how the game is played for Part 2:

  • First, you will need to spot the  3 words from the word puzzle.
  • Among the 3 words, you can choose one of the words and write out a 4-line poem related to the word that you’ve chosen.
  • You can either choose to e-mail us the 3 words + your poem (info@cloudsncups.com) or leave it at the comment section of this post.
  • Do remember to let us know the ‘word’ that you are using and not to forget the title of your poem.
  • As we are still not sure how good the response of this game would be, we will first set a limit to the first 10 received poem submissions.
  • Once we’ve collected 10 entries, we will upload all the 10 poems for sharing purpose.
  • The winner will be selected by the 10 contestants themselves after all the 10 poems have been uploaded.

  • We can always hold a second round if everyone thinks this is fun to play. So, do let us know after this, okay? 😀

From the past few ‘Let’s Play’ sessions, we’ve realized that the instructions were not given very clearly and thus some lovely souls were clueless of what to do and so this time round, I shall get the ball rolling first:

The first 3 words that I see in the puzzle

LOVE, MONEY, FRIEND

And I’ve chosen the word ‘Friend’ for my poem entry

04172013 - The Ship

The poem entries will be presented in the above format for the voting sessions. You don’t have to copy this format, all you need to do is to submit the wordings and we will take care of the design.
