Always A Day Away~

Past,Future,Present - 7-12-2012

One fine day, a lady was inside a mall doing her Christmas shopping. Her eyes immediately brightened up when she noticed a poster outside one of her favourite shops:

” ENJOY A DISCOUNT OF 99%  ON ALL ITEMS, STARTING FROM TOMORROW!!”

The next day, she happily skipped into the shop and started putting things into her cart without even looking at the price tags, why bother?

Her eyes almost popped out when the cashier informed her the final amount to be paid.

“Why is it still so expensive? You didn’t even apply the discount.”

The lady glared at the young cashier.

“Please…read…the…poster…aloud…”

The cashier requested in a stammering tone and so, the lady started reading it out loud.

” ENJOY A DISCOUNT OF 99%  ON ALL ITEMS, STARTING FROM TOMORROW…”

The moral of this story:

TODAY is a present but you can always enjoy a good discount during TOMORROWs!!

May this short and hopefully laughable story prepare you for a great day ahead!

Till then,

Cheers & TTFN~ 😀

Do You Have A Question?

This morning, I was browsing through the TV programs and stopped at a channel featuring a Korean horror movie:

A man received a call from a man telling him that his wife was actually having an affair behind his back. He thought it was only a prank call.

Then, when his mother asked him who was the man she saw talking to his wife at the road side during the other day and she was very sure that the lady was her daughter-in-law.

CNC-RR002-AGED-BRONZE-GEM-EYE-OWL

And the owl keeps going: “Who? Who? Who?”

The man ended up killing his wife, got out of the prison and tried to locate the man who made the prank call but ended up being ridiculed by the mystery caller and still  failed to receive the answer he was looking for  — was his wife really having an affair?

He was already a regretful and confused old man when the two main characters managed to locate him and this was his conclusion:

“Thinking about too many questions without answers, it will become a curse.”

Questions - 22-1-2013It wouldn’t be a curse if only he would have asked his wife in the first place.

His conclusion has somehow reminded me of a song which I’ve learnt many many many many years ago (when the first digit of my age began with a number ‘1’) — a song with interesting questions and wise answers.

Love Can Burn - 22-1-2013

Lyrics taken from Tumbalalaika (English Version)

The version I’ve learnt, apparently is an English version and a shorter one, the lyrics are as follow:

Maiden, Maiden Tell Me True

What Can Grow Without The Dew

What Can Burn For Years And Years

What Can Cry And Shed No Tears

Tum-bala, Tum-bala, Tum-bala Laika x 2

Tum-bala Laika x 4

Foolish Lad, I’ll Tell You True

A Stone Can Grow Without A Dew

Love Can Burn For Years And Years

A Heart Can Cry And Shed No Tears

Tumbalalaika is a Russian Jewish folk and love song in the Yiddish language. Tuml is the Yiddish word for noise and a balalaika is a stringed musical instrument of Russian origin.  (Wikipedia)

A Balalaika (Taken From Wikipedia)

This love story is about a smart young lad who wants to get married and he wants to choose a smart girl to be his bride as well. So, he stays up late at night, inventing riddles to test his bride.

Here’s a video of the song in its original language:

As a matter of fact, there are more riddles that weren’t sung out in the video and here are the missing riddles:

What is higher than a house?

What is swifter than a mouse?

What is deeper than a well?

What is bitter, more bitter than gall?

***

A chimney is higher than a house

A cat is swifter than a mouse

The Torah is deeper than a well

Death is bitter, more bitter than gall

“Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.” ~ Voltaire

Have fun reading this post!

Till then,

Cheers & TTFN~

When The Wise One Meets The Proud One

CNC-LN027-BLACK-EYED-ROUNDED-OWL

A WISE OLD OWL

A wise old owl lived in an oak

The more he saw the less he spoke

The less he spoke the more he heard.

Why can’t we all be like that wise old bird?

Owls are one of the oldest species of vertebrate animal in existence, fossils have been found dating back 60 million years, showing the bird to have changed very little in that time and they are one of the few birds that have been found in prehistoric cave paintings.

In ancient Greece, owls were often seen as a symbol of good fortune. The idea of the ‘wise old owl‘ may have come into being from the association of the Little Owl with the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athene.

In contrast, the Romans saw owls as omens of impending disaster.

Hearing the hoot of an owl indicated an imminent death, it is thought that the deaths of many famous Romans was predicted by the hoot of an owl, including Julius Caesar, Augustus & Agrippa.

To ward off the evil caused by an owl, it was believed that the offending owl should be killed & nailed to the door of the affected house.

In India, there were beliefs about events predicted by the number of owl hoots:

  • 1 time = impending death
  • 2 times = success in imminent venture
  • 3 times = woman will be married into the family
  • 4 times = disturbance
  • 5 times = imminent travel
  • 6 times = guests arriving
  • 7 times = mental distress
  • 8 times = sudden death
  • 9 times = good fortune

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ 10 TIMES=  THE OWL IS VERY VERY VERY HUNGRY!!! ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶

(can’t help but to add in this for fun…lol…)

A Wise Owl: I am not a proud bird.

A Proud Peacock: It is good to stay humble.

A Wise Owl: Yeah…I am wise enough to know that I cannot be too proud.

A Proud Peacock: …………

Maybe it might be the very serious look on the owl’s face that gave people the idea that the owl was wise, unfortunately, the owl is not a wise animal and in fact, for its size, the owl has a small brain and is not as smart as geese, crows, and ravens.

Wise or not wise, here’s a video of some true facts about the owl to share with you lovely souls out there.

Enjoy reading and watching!

The Definition of a Rose

CNC-RR013B-BIG-ROSE

” A Rose is a rose is a rose.”

And no, there is no typo-error here but a very intriguing phrase, so here’s its meaning and origin.

Meaning: Most often attributed to this is the notion that when all is said and done, a thing is what it is.

Origin: The line is from Gertrude Stein’s poem Sacred Emily, written in 1913 and published in 1922, in Geography and Plays.

Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose

“Those Daily Things” ~ Another Blog Recommendation

This is our first blog recommendation post in the Year 2013.

ID-10056131

Hmm…is it our first? Let me check…Yes, it is indeed…phew!

CNC-RR002-AGED-BRONZE-GEM-EYE-OWL-B

Is it going to be another owl-related blog?

ID-10056130

NOPE

It is just that this lovely soul has a picture of the same ring in his/her post that drew me away from my reader and into his/her lovely blog.

Basically, this is a very simple blog, with each post having titles beginning with “…LIKE…” and a simple picture of those daily things in life.

Although the pictures are not those top notch pictures which we’ve seen in other photo blogs, I simply love the way how each picture is relating to the post title and vice versa.

The blog is so interesting that I was basically clicking the link of the first post and then all the way to the last post. I think I’ve ‘liked’ almost all the posts….

ID-10057684

Gosh…I do hope this lovely soul won’t mind us spamming his/her inbox with those  ‘like’ notifications…

Last but not least, I love the quote that this lovely soul is using as the blog’s tagline:

” It is by studying little things the we attain the great art of having as little misery and as much happiness as possible.”

– Samuel Johnson

Is it very enlightening?

Well, I do feel much enlightened after reading this quote, I do hope you lovely souls out there will share the same sentiment.

So, without further adieu, here is the link to this beautiful blog: http://thosedailythings.wordpress.com/

May you all enjoy this blog recommendation.

Till then,

Cheers & TTFN~ 🙂

Which Turkey Is Older?

CNC-RR014 - AZURE SPRING BUD

Since it is already the season of thanksgiving, we’ve decided to do a post related to the big bird, Turkey.

Alas, we’ve no jewelry pieces with a turkey design (hmmm…would you wear one if there is any??? I wonder…) so we’ve chosen another bunch of flowers, with each little flower representing the heart of each thankful soul out there.

Hope you all will like it.

Turkey, known officially as the Republic of Turkey, is a Eurasian country located in Western Asia and in East Thrace in Southeastern Europe. The history of Turkey begins with the migration of Oghuz Turks into Anatolia in the context of the larger Turkic expansion, forming the Seljuq Empire in the 11th century AD.

The country’s official language is Turkish, which is spoken by approximately 85% of the population as mother tongue. The most numerous ethnic group are Turks, who constitute between 70% and 75% of the population according to the World Factbook.

The name of Turkey, literally meaning “owner”, “land of” or “related to” and a Turk can mean either “a citizen of the modern state of Turkey” or more broadly, “an individual of the Turkic-speaking people.”

When Europeans first encountered this big bird in America, they incorrectly identified the birds as a type of guinea fowl which were also known as turkey fowl (or turkey hen and turkey cock) because they were imported to Central Europe through Turkey.

The name turkey fowl, shortened to just the name of the country, stuck as the name of the North American bird. However some people around the world don’t call them Turkeys. Here are some examples:

  • Across Arabia, they call it “diiq Hindi,” or the “Indian rooster.”
  • In Russia, it’s “Indjushka,” bird of India.
  • In Poland, “Inyczka”— again “bird from India.”

Last but not least, do the people in Turkey call it Turkey as well since it is named after their country?

The answer is…no.

Well, they call it “Hindi — again, short for India.

Although this large bird is named after the country Turkey, many turkeys have already been described from fossils.

The well-documented California Turkey Meleagris californica, became extinct recently enough to have been hunted by early human settlers and it is believed its demise was due to the combined pressures of climate change at the end of the last glacial period and hunting.

So, which Turkey is older?

The country or the big bird?

Read more at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_(bird)

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=97541602

In Singapore, we call it ‘Turkey” in English but in Mandarin, it will be “huo ji” (火鸡), literally meaning ‘Fire Chicken’.

Don’t ask me why, I guess maybe it is because of its outlook??

Hope you all enjoy this post.

Till then, have a great weekend ahead!!

Cheers & TTFN~ 😀
